MPG stands for miles per gallon, a unit of measure referring (in the most common sense) to how efficiently a fuel-powered engine converts the potential energy of its fuel into distance traveled for the engine and its payload.

For our purposes, the payload is an automobile ("car") plus passenger(s), and the fuel is typically, but not always, gasoline.
